Most business owners think of their Google Business Profile as a formality. You claim it, add your phone number, maybe upload a logo, and move on. I want to push back on that, because it's one of the few things you control that directly shapes whether someone finds you or finds your competitor.

Here's what most people don't realize: your profile isn't a static listing. It's a data source. Google reads it. Google Maps reads it. And increasingly, AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity read it too when someone asks who to call for something near them. If your profile is thin, incomplete, or hasn't been touched in months, you're telling every one of those systems that you're either inactive or not worth trusting with the recommendation.

I recently went through my own profile

And realized how much of it I'd left blank. It's an easy thing to skip, especially when you're heads down running the business. But it's also one of the few places where a small amount of effort has an outsized effect, because almost nobody finishes the job.

A few things that actually matter

1

Get your category right.

Your primary category should describe exactly what you do, not the closest generic option. If there's a more specific category available, use it. Add relevant secondary categories too. This is how Google decides which searches you're even eligible to show up for.

2

Write a real description.

Not keyword stuffing, just a clear, honest paragraph about who you serve and where. If you serve a specific region, say so directly.

3

List every service you offer.

With a short description for each. An empty services tab tells Google, and anyone reading it, less than nothing.

4

Keep your photos current.

Add new ones periodically. A profile with the same three photos from two years ago reads as neglected, even if the business behind it is thriving.

5

Post updates.

It doesn't need to be constant, but a profile that never posts looks abandoned next to one that shows signs of life.

None of this is complicated. It's just tedious, and tedious things get skipped. That's exactly why doing it properly is worth more than it looks like on paper. Your competitors are skipping it too.

If you haven't looked at your profile in a while, that's the first place to spend thirty minutes this week. Not a redesign of your website. Not a new ad campaign. Just go fill in what's missing.
